Our beloved NHS is in the shitter
I already know this through recent family illnesses and deaths, but watching a programme last night on channel 4 called Confessions of a Junior Doctor I realised that it really might be end times for this great Institution.
When you see one Sn Consultant trying to run a 12 hour shift with a few Jr Doctors who are fresh out of school and are running around like headless chickens when the pressure is on it is very scary, add to that they work stupid long hours which is dangerous for patients.
The General election is close and if the current lot continue to be in charge I am certain things May get a lot worse (see what I did there), because things have obviously gone down hill badly since they got in and it was not much better under Labour, it is clear to see for me anyway that they are trying to run it like a business on the cheap, and that is the last thing that organisation was meant to be.
One final thing, God help us all if we are seriously ill and fall into the hands of the current NHS .

You don't have to be a pensioner - 60 & over will do for free prescriptions. Same for free travel on the London underground, buses & trams.

Arf! @ "Hells bells"

Proper old school exclamation, that. Deserves a revival.

Unless you are one of the exemptions (on benefits, pensioner, health care tourist presumably) you pay £8.60 for a prescription.

Not used the NHS in years, but been using the Spanish equivalent which has its problems especially the long waiting

A couple things that they do here that could help in the UK, perhaps you have them, no idea. Also I am not saying they are good ideas, just how it is done in other places

Here to use the system you must have a health card, no health card then no care or rather you must have a medical insurance to recieve the care. Every national or non-national with a job (paying taxes) has a card, although you have to pay 6 euros for the card (cost to issue the card).

All prescriptions cost 2 euros, does not matter about the cost of the medicine, you have to pay 2 euros for each packet. Must be a pain for really sick people that take a shit load of medicines, but that is how it is (I think, not had many prescriptions).

Cant you just smash a door down, barge a few security guards out of the way and windmill the nurses and doctors?

More money won't solve the issue of numbers of patients.
In our area no hospitals have closed in my lifetime and there are plenty of GP surgery's yet the hospitals are rammed whenever or whichever dept I visit and we can not get an appointment with our GP for at least 2 weeks, even emergencies you have to be v lucky.

The missus is a paediatric nurse. I know all about the waste. The medicine they have to throw away each 3 months runs into around £10,000 and that's just one surgery. None of it is needed, its simply further up the chain not having a clue how to run a bath.

She has a work phone she never uses, they all do (it sits at the bottom of her bag never turned on) same as the other nurses, they are now being given tablets or Fablets I think they are calling them, once again, they do not need them or want them but are getting them.

All money being wasted on stuff they don't need, no one listens to them, when they say they are a waste of time and money, middle management has killed the NHS. Just in that surgery they probably waste £60,000 a year on medicine and gadgets alone no one needs and that is repeated up and down the UK on a massive scale.

Re: Our beloved NHS is in the shitter
There does seem to be an attitude in government and higher administrative circles that goes "If you can't fix all of the NHS, don't bother trying to fix any of it".

If the government really wants to focus (the public's) attention on NHS costs then NI should be a mandatory first tax on everybody (yes, even those on benefits (a paper exercise, but an issue-focussing one)) so there is a direct, visible correlation between revenue raised and service delivered. NI is ring-fenced for qualifying causes (i.e. health & social care) only. Outside that, private insurance can cover the costs.

It's not even THAT difficult to administer - everybody has a certain level of health insurance as a pre-requisite to applying for treatment; qualifying treatment is covered under the NHS, non-qualifying is picked up by the individual's insurance policy. Whack in a "no-claims bonus" aspect and it will soon become self-policing.

Medical staff, NOT politicians or administrators decide what qualifies and what doesn't.

The issues with the NHS are huge and complicated. It's not a simple single issue. Immigration and health tourism is a bit of a red herring imho.

There is plenty of money available but it's wasted everywhere. Suppliers ripping them off being a huge case. Huge amount spent on locums and emergency bank staff.

Lack of community and home support. One thing that has changed massively is the number of people stuck in hospitals (bed blockers) because they have nowhere to go - they used to be cared for at home but people just don't do this anymore.

A&E being a new GP service is another huge issue. People do go to Doctor's more readily now. The woman who took her 3 year old to an A&E because her daughter trod in dog shit is one I've heard.

People living longer too.

Alcohol is also a massive issue and anyone who says it isn't is a fucking liar.

Patients sense of entitlement is a causing alot of problems as well. My wife works in a Hospital and some of the stories are just mind boggling. The man who screamed in my wife's face that the teenage girl with cancer who has taken his non essential operation was not his problem. Patients staying in Hotels in central London overnight paid for by the NHS as they have to do this to make their morning appointment as they live so far away and endless transport costs, Non essential treatments. Patients not turning up with DNA rates through the roof.

Staff abusing the public sector mentality of call the union, playing the sick day game etc. I know one person who is miraculously off sick every school holiday but no-one ever does anything about it.

Mandatory private health care for anyone who earns over say £50k a year paid for by their employer would help a bit as would fining patients who don't turn up. But anyone who says it can be fixed quickly is just wrong.

The NHS is brilliant for serious things but maintenance is becoming an issue.

there are not too many people, there are fewer Hospitals, caused by our Government.

Re: Our beloved NHS is in the shitter
i pay more than enough tax and NI thanks.
The problem is too many people using it, walk into any Hospital or surgery in any city and you’ll see it straight away. Same with all our infrastructure. Too many fucking g people here, end of!
The answer in not to throw more money at it or build more, it is about managing it better and controlling numbers.
Too many soft lefty cunts involved!

A freind of mine works in a private hospital and he tells me almost all of the work they do is operations for NHS patients mainly bangladeshis, whose GPS send them and also their families who fly in see their gp get a NI number and pronto private health care we pay for

MATE of mine is a radiographer who recently joined one of the most prostidious hospitals in the private sector (they have a doorman in top hat and tails). He said their MRI exuipment is dogs hit compared to the NHS, which is state of the art.

Re: Our beloved NHS is in the shitter
If the freebooters and not really qualifying who use the NHS were eliminated in overall terms there would not be much of a difference to it's current performance.

It's politically handy to lay blame in this way but the UK does not contribute, as a proportion of it's GDP, as much as Eoropean neighbours. The reality is if we want a better service we need to pay more. The big question is not should we rather it is how do we, raise taxes to pay indirectly or by payment at point of contact?

Mike Oxsaw 11:23 Thu Apr 20
Re: Our beloved NHS is in the shitter
Valid Health Insurance should be a condition of entry into the UK (from ANY part of the world).

A valid, legitimate UK passport is proof enough that you're entitled, but ALL others should pay fpr cover before travelling - in fact it's not hard to make it a condition of carriage - no valid Health Insurance? Sorry, you can't even travel to (or via) the UK.

And a big, fuck-off fine/threat of licence revocation for any travel company that ignores such a mandate.

What do you mean "NOT FAIR!!!!"? Explain!

Re: Our beloved NHS is in the shitter
It's no free we pay for it through taxes of one sort or another, prescription items are paid for ( by employed adults subject to earnings criteria ) and so too is dental treatment.

Iron2010 9:32 Thu Apr 20
Re: Our beloved NHS is in the shitter
I shouldn't get this service for free. Very low earners and the unemployed should but I'd happily pay 50 quid for doctor appointments and get the rest covered by private health care. It's a ridiculous system but politically toxic to change.

13 Brentford Rd 9:31 Thu Apr 20
Re: Our beloved NHS is in the shitter
No it's not free, some of us actually pay tax & NI.

Re: Our beloved NHS is in the shitter
its difficult to change the free system, but a good start is to charge the foreign free loaders, like we do abroad.
